Match Report - "Ladies Selection Box v DePauw University" (13/08/2017)

August 14, 2017

Welcome back to your soon to be weekly digest of Bray Hockey Club match reports. This year we are going to be bigger, better and bolder! As a starting point this week we went global as DePauw University from Indiana, USA rolled into town.

Disappointingly however Bray did not provide cheerleaders for their visiting American cousins. Nor were there any corn dogs, hot dogs or twizzlers in sight, mental note to try harder next time.

Waiting eagerly to play DePauw was a "selection box" of Bray players. Eager to make our visitors feel at home, Bray agreed to a 4 "quarters" game. The first quarter started a bit frantically as the Bray selection box of players were all keen to impress. The first goal for Bray came via a short corner, a rebound falling to returning "Star Bar" Rachel Maguire who smashed it tennis style past the keeper 1-0 to Bray! Another returnee Megan Shelly got a quick second goal to put Bray 2-0 up at the quarter break.

Coach Greg decided to mix things up for the next quarter and made a host of Bray changes. Claire P for one was in need of a "Time Out" and a stick without a hole in it. The 2nd quarter saw Bray's defence come to the fore as the experienced heads of Lauren and Aoife worked brilliantly with the very impressive Jennifer Corson who was making her first senior match appearance!

The final 2 quarters of the match were probably Bray's best in terms of quality although they did concede a well deserved goal to the visitors. Ruth McDonagh was performing "Curly Wurlys" all over the right wing, Sam Henson was putting in some seriously "Crunchie" tackles while Cheryl parked the "Double Decker" bus at the back of the pitch.  All in all a very good performance from Brays selection box leaving Greg and Cheryl with some very difficult decisions to make for the season ahead. There's sure to be a lot of "Wispas" during the week so it's good timing for Gregle to be taking a "Kit Kat" break.

Thanks to Depauw for a fantastic game and for the souvenir T-shirts 😄. Further thanks to Niamh for umpiring, Greg and Cheryl for coaching and Sarah Finnegan for the tuck shop (points deducted for the lack of twizzlers however)

See everyone back here shortly for "Moro" of the same as the season kicks off.
