Bray L2s travelled to play Monkstown 3s in Rathdown on Saturday. Things weren’t looking too good for the team a few days before when they realised they were missing 5 of their squad, one being Captain Fantastic CP whose passport WILL mysteriously disappear when she gets home this time! But all was good again when the Gaffer (aka Niamh Breathnach) announced her replacements (who were high tailing it from their 3s game that morning to help out). Bray started strong (for a change) and were putting great pressure on the “TOWN” defence. Rhona (speedy legs) Baker was getting to balls that Usain Bolt would be proud to reach and as for Vicky (total legend) Coen, who despite having surgery during the week was on fire as usual. Luca Dunne was outstanding in midfield and her hard work paid off when she broke down the right and past the ball to super sub Caoimhe Guilfoyle who made no mistake and hit the back board. 1-0 to Bray. Bray kept the pressure up and another great steal by Vicky Coen on the left a pass to Caoimhe who found her team mate Juliette in a great position to hammer it home with an excellent strike. The gaffer had a smug look on her face as if to say “I done good”. Just before half time the Town finished the stronger and despite some excellent defending from Sinead (Tooler) O'Toole, Amy (the real captain fantastic) Armstrong, Di (oh so calm) Dunne, and Anna (how did she get that) Lalor and the ever amazing Suzie, the Town captialised on a short corner to make it 2-1 going into the second half.
Saoirse Guilfoyle (who definitely gets some of her mother’s “toughness” DNA) was a powerhouse in midfield, winning every tackle and creating lots of moves up the left hand side. The ever impressive Emer O’Reilly was a work horse in centre midfield and won a short corner for Bray. A fast ball out by Luca was buried into the back of the goal by Vicky Coen to make it 3-1 to Bray. Monkstown never gave up and put plenty of pressure on the Bray defence. Substitute Caoimhe Hardiman impressed in defense and Suzie was as always there to clean up in goals. Excellent work by Amy Armstrong up the right hand side, laid a ball off to Kathy O'Toole who worked it into the circle and followed up on the rebound to find Caoimhe Guilfoyle on the left post who made sure and put it away for Bray’s 4th of the day.
Ali Kavanagh made some great moves down the right and was unlucky not to get a 5th. Overall a good day at the office for the L2s who make it 2 from 2 wins. Huge thanks to 3rds players Caoimhe G, Juliette, Caoimhe H, and Ali K who helped out, to Umpire Cian Hussey who ran from his game, and to our Gaffer Niamh Breathnach (who was probably at her 10th game of the day). L2s are onto a tough game next week against Guinness away in the Iveagh Grounds.
