Match Report! L4s v Rathgar (02/12/17)

December 4, 2017

Bray L4 vs Rathgar L4 (2-1) Alison Dawson and Clara O’Shea.

The 4ths who played away in Rathgar this Saturday, managed to hold their joint first place position in the league. Knowing it was going to be a tough match, the focus of the game was to get the ball in the net and clock up those all-important goals!

Despite a relatively slow first fifteen, with Bray under pressure due to the physicality and consistent strength of Rathgar, the midfield and backs managed to absorb the pressure and control the game in Bray’s favour. The tempo and pace of the game significantly increased with Alison and Lara making some important runs and winning a short corner. Unfortunately, no goal materialised. Towards the end of the first half, Bray managed to put some great pressure on Rathgar’s game with some brilliant press tactics, making it hard for Rathgar to get the ball past the likes of Orla, Erika and Clara. When the half time whistle blew there was a clear understanding that a goal was crucial and that working together as team would be essential for winning the game.

For a prolonged period in the second half the defence were under a lot of pressure but manged to absorb it with Sharon, Sophie, Francis and Orla making some crucial saves and feeding the ball back out to the mid-field. Christina, who was in goals, also made some impressive saves and managed to withstand some serious pressure from Rathgar. Despite the impressive defence, Rathgar managed to make a break through Bray and in a one-on-one with the goalie, the ball went in, despite a daring attempt by the goalie.

With less than 10 minutes to go and one nil down, Bray brought a new level to their game and the fight began. Again with incredible pace and tenacity Alison, playing in centre position, took on the Rathgar defence and managed to get a brilliant solo goal. Brining the score to 1-1, with 5 minutes left to go.

With their usual Bray spirit, the girls found there was still a lot to play for and the game quickly switched from defence to attacking. With the increased momentum Bray managed to win a short corner, just as the final whistle blew! With a word from the captain, Bray brought all their players to the top of the D in a last ditch attempt to get the winning goal. Despite the nail biting pressure, Lara stopped the ball with clear accuracy and took a strike. Due to serious defensive pressure from Rathgar, the ball was stopped but not in time for Clara, who with great resolve, was on the rebound for a goal. Manging to sneak the ball behind the goalie, Clara secured Bray the winning goal!

The girls look forward to their upcoming matches with a clear understanding of what needs to be done to secure their position in the league. A brilliant performance from all the players. The ladies fours are delighted to take home 3 points from a tough away fixture leaving them in joint first position at the top of the table with Portrane’s 1st‘s.

A massive thanks to our coach, Adam for his continuous support, encouragement and belief in our team.
