The Ladies 5th travelled to Weston on Saturday needing a win to keep promotion chances alive, so eager to get going Anette arrived an hour early (might be a future strategy). The team which always has new faces welcomed Robyn and Ailbhe from the under 16s to bolster the squad. Coach Niamh had obviously checked the weather report and decided in the heat more substitutions would be required.
The game started at slow pace for Bray as Weston applied some early pressure winning a series of short corners but Ash Carthy marshalled the defence well and steadied the ship. Then a moment to change the game Bray broke from their own half moving the ball quickly to Annette who riffled an unstoppable shot past the Weston keeper. Bray took control of the match from here on with Maria, Ann, Sarah F and Ciara clearing up any balls that crossed the half way line. The midfield of Frances, Katie and Emily (Captain) linking up perfectly to create more goal chances for Annette, Rebecca and Ailbhe. Following a well worked short corner Annette fired in a 2nd goal and Bray were cruising. There was a brief stoppage as a Weston player took a raised ball to the face but she was able to continue and we hope she is doing well.
The 2nd half began much like the 1st had ended, Bray were hungry for more goals and probed the Weston defence for weaknesses. Subs Sarah R and Robyn were making big differences providing fresh legs and new attacking threats. Katie buoyed by her personal support crew was having a stormer in midfield and following another wave of Bray attack Rebecca calmly finished past the keeper for 3-0. With club top scorer on her mind she wasn’t long in getting her 2nd 4-0 Bray and to complete the scoring Annette popped up with another to complete her hat-trick and give Bray a 5-0 win.
This result keeps Bray right in the mix for promotion as Enniscorthy beat Portrane later on Saturday, leaving Bray 2 points from top of league with 3 games to play. Next up for the Ladies is a trip to Genesis on 2nd March @ 16.45, all support welcomed.
